Window Tinting
Window tinting can give a stylish look to a modern home, but it's not all looks. Window tinting reflects away a great deal of solar radiation, meaning your cooling systems don't need to work as hard and therefore indirectly saving energy.

If you are prepared to DIY, then you can typically tint your whole home for under $400 with a weekend's work. Basically all that is involved is;
- Thoroughly clean the inside of the window using window cleaner and razor blades. Any spec of dirt will cause a bubble.

Fluorescent Light Recycling
Fluorescent lights contain a small amount of mercury (see how fluorescent lights work), they should never be put into landfill or recycled in the household recycling bin, they need to be dropped off at a specialist recycling centre.

Ceramic Insulation Paint
Microscopic ceramic balls with the consistency of talcum powder are added to standard interior or exterior paint to enhance the thermal insulation property of the material upon which it is painted.
This paint additive is available under a number of different names. Essentially it is a waste product that NASA discovered to have exceptional insulation properties.
Electric Heat Pump Hot Water Systems
Electric heat pump systems function like a reverse cycle air conditioner. Heat is extracted from the surrounding air, even at quite low ambient temperatures.
Heat pump systems are almost as efficient as solar hot water systems.
T5 Fluorescent Lighting
A new more efficient kind of fluorescent tube has been developed. The new tubes are called T5's whereas the old are T8's.
All new facilities should specify T5 as they use up to 40% less energy than the equivalent T8 and give off 10-15% more light! This is achieved by a better performing tri-phosphor coating.
